Sugarcane: The Root of Our Story
Sugarcane is more than an ingredient for us; it’s the beginning of our story. It shaped Indo-Fijian and Indo-Caribbean history: our families, our food, our language, and our traditions.
For many in our community, sugarcane was where everything began. It’s what brought our ancestors to the islands, where they built new lives from the soil up. From those fields grew more than crops, they grew strength, resilience, and a culture that continues to thrive today.
From History to Heritage
The story of sugarcane is complex, dating back to the 1800s when Indian laborers were taken to colonies across the Caribbean and the Pacific to work on sugarcane plantations under British colonial rule. What started in hardship, labor, and displacement evolved over generations into something resilient and beautiful.
New languages were formed. Spices, songs, and customs intertwined. Communities rose with pride and creativity, blending the roots of India with the rhythm of the Caribbean and the islands of the Pacific.
A Return to Roots
When we started Sulina Shop, we didn’t set out to tell a story; we were simply looking for skincare that worked for us. But in returning to the ingredients we grew up with, we found ourselves reconnecting with our heritage.
So when we learned about the benefits of sugarcane extract for the skin, it felt like coming full circle. What once defined our past now helps renew it.
Sugarcane extract naturally supports skin renewal, enhances softness, and helps maintain lasting hydration. For us, it’s more than science; it’s symbolism. It’s care that runs deep, rooted in both nature and history.
Today, you’ll find sugarcane extract in our Plant-Based Facial Toner and our Hemi-Squalane, which is 100% derived from sugarcane.
From the Fields, We Rise
Our ancestors once worked among the sugarcane fields. Today, we honor their strength by creating from that same source, not with labor but with love.
Because what began in the fields has grown into something far greater: identity, community, and pride.
And through every product we make, we carry that story forward, a reminder that care can grow from even the hardest soil.
