We know that living an Ayurvedic lifestyle spans far beyond skin care, and following its many principles can lead to a healthful and vibrant lifestyle. By nourishing your mind, body, and spirit with Ayurvedic practices, you can help to create a sense of fulfillment and peace that radiates throughout your life.
Showing your body love through what you eat, believe and do helps to honor your natural abilities to find balance, strength and calm.
What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda can be translated to “knowledge of life,” meaning that one must strive to find a balance between the body, mind and spirit for living a healthy and full life.
The Ayurvedic system focuses on personal body types -- also known as doshas -- which are energies found throughout the body and mind. The doshas derive from five elements: water, fire, air, earth, and space. Understanding these unique energies allows those who follow Ayurveda to discover different aspects of their personalities, and properly care for their entire beings.
Ayurvedic medicine is one of the world’s oldest medical systems, and remains one of India’s traditional health care systems. Those who practice Ayurvedic medicine have extensive knowledge about the human body and all its energies, and how these energies have the power to bring about wholeness in our lives.
Traditional Ayurvedic treatments combine plant-based medicine, diet and exercise to promote overall health and well-being in all areas of one’s life.
Ayurvedic Diet
An Ayurvedic lifestyle starts with eating and digesting nourishing food, including all-natural, organic, and whole foods. These foods work to nourish and heal our bodies from the inside, and choosing the proper ingredients -- along with natural, medicinal spices -- is key for giving your body everything it needs to be in balance.
The Ayurvedic diet has been shown to help people overcome gastrointestinal conditions, curb anxiety, heal ulcers, help lose weight, and energize their lives. A healthy gut (as opposed to a nutrient-deficient gut) can help to address dizziness, anxiety, nervous stomach, low energy, weakness, and more.
Which foods are considered Ayurvedic? Primarily those that are whole or minimally processed, roasted nuts, wild caught fish, grains, beans, leafy vegetables, and other foods that are made without large amounts of added fat, salt, and sugar.
Herbs are also a great way to boost the immune system. Fennel seeds have shown to help aid in digestion. Turmeric, ginger, and fermented foods (such as yogurt and miso) are effective for maintaining a healthy gut.
Lastly, the Ayurvedic lifestyle also promotes the practice of mindful eating rituals. Good eating habits include eating slowly and mindfully, avoiding overeating, and forgoing late night snacking.
Ayurvedic Exercise
Ayurveda principles encourage exercise as a way to feel healthy and balanced, and honor your body. Yoga, meditation and mindful breathing have been practiced for centuries, and are excellent methods for bringing awareness to the body and mind. Daily exercise helps to make the body feel light and strong, aid in digestion, and boost metabolism. The idea is: if you show your body love, your body will work better for you in return.
Try this: for just 5-10 minutes each day, practice yoga or meditation at home. These practices teach strength, happiness, focus, and well-being, and help bring about an awareness of the present moment.
According to the Ayurveda system, exercise is the most powerful thing you can do to stay healthy. Aligning your dosha with physical activities well suited for your body/energy type, is an effective way to find the best physical practices for you.
